Primary school builds knowledge. Middle school begins asking children to do something with it.
A Grade 3 science question asks what photosynthesis is. A Grade 7 question asks why a plant kept in a dark cupboard for a week looks the way it does. The second question cannot be answered from memory. It needs a child to hold a concept in mind and apply it somewhere unfamiliar.
Mathematics shifts in the same way. Arithmetic rewards practice and recall. Algebra rewards understanding why a method works, because the moment the numbers are rearranged, a memorised procedure stops helping.
This is not a harder version of the same thing. It is a different demand, and it arrives gradually enough that most families do not notice it happening.
The clearest test costs nothing and takes two minutes. Ask your child to explain something they have just studied, out loud, in their own words, to somebody who does not know the topic. You will do perfectly well as that person.
A child who understands will explain it badly at first, then find better words as they go. They will use their own phrasing, offer an example, and often correct themselves halfway through.
A child who has memorised will repeat the textbook wording, and if you ask a follow-up question that moves slightly sideways, the explanation stops rather than adapting.
Other signals worth noticing:
1. They can do the questions in the exercise but not the same idea in an examination, where it appears in a different form.
2. They ask what the method is rather than why it works.
3. They are thrown by a question that looks unfamiliar even when the underlying concept is one they know.
None of this reflects intelligence or effort. It usually reflects a study habit that worked well for several years and has quietly stopped working.
That question has one answer, and it tells you very little.
Better questions take about the same amount of time.
What was the hardest part of that? This surfaces the sticking point, which is where the learning actually is.
Can you show me how you got that? Not to check the answer, but to hear the reasoning.
What would happen if the numbers were different? A child who understands will think about it. A child who has memorised will look uncertain.
Explain that to me like I have never heard of it. The most useful of the four.
Asked once in a while, in a relaxed way, these do more than an hour of supervision. Asked every night as an interrogation, they do the opposite.
Most middle school parents are now wondering about this, so it is worth addressing directly rather than avoiding.
Artificial intelligence tools are genuinely useful for learning. They are also the most efficient way ever invented to produce a finished piece of homework that a child has learned nothing from. Both things are true, and the difference lies entirely in what the child asks the tool to do.
There is one question that separates the two, and it is worth keeping in mind: did the tool help my child understand the work, or did it simply finish it?
Asking a chatbot to solve a maths problem finishes it. Asking it to explain the step where you got stuck, and then attempting the next question alone, deepens the learning. Asking it to write a paragraph finishes it. Asking it to suggest three counterarguments to a paragraph a child has already written makes them think harder.
Two things parents should know. Generative AI is not intended for students in the younger grades, and national guidance in the UAE sets the line at around Grade 7, so younger children should not be relying on these tools at all. And these systems produce confident text that is sometimes simply wrong, which is a difficult idea for a twelve year old to hold onto and worth explaining at home.
Schools across the UAE are working through this thoughtfully rather than banning it outright, and the direction is towards teaching students to use these tools honestly and to declare when they have. That is a skill worth having, and it belongs in the same conversation as understanding rather than memorising.
A well designed middle school classroom pushes for understanding rather than recall, and it is visible if you know what to look for.
Teachers ask students to explain their reasoning aloud, not only to write the answer. Assessments include questions students have not seen before, applying a familiar concept in an unfamiliar setting. Wrong answers get examined rather than corrected, because the misunderstanding underneath is the useful part. And subjects connect, so a concept met in science reappears in mathematics.

Let your child struggle a little longer before stepping in.
The temptation, especially with a frustrated eleven year old at nine in the evening, is to explain it and end the evening. Ten more minutes of a child working at something slightly beyond them is where understanding forms. The discomfort is the learning.
That does not mean leaving them stranded. It means offering a hint rather than a method, asking a question rather than giving an answer, and being willing to let tonight's homework be imperfect in exchange for something that lasts.
1. Why did my child's marks drop in Grade 6 or 7?
Often because the questions changed rather than the child. Middle school asks students to apply concepts rather than recall them, and study habits take a term or two to catch up.
2. How do I know if my child really understands something?
Ask them to explain it out loud in their own words to someone who does not know the topic. Understanding sounds different from recitation.
3. Is memorising ever useful?
Yes. Vocabulary, formulae and number facts all need to be known fluently. The problem is memorising in place of understanding, not alongside it.
4. Should I let my child use AI for homework?
It depends entirely on how. Using it to understand a step is helpful. Using it to produce the work is not, and younger students should not be using these tools at all.
5. My child gets homework right but does badly in exams. Why?
Usually because the exam presents the same idea in an unfamiliar form. It points to recall rather than understanding.
6. How much should I help with homework?
Less than most of us want to. A hint is more useful than an explanation, and letting a child sit with difficulty is part of how learning happens.
If your child is in the middle years and something has shifted, that is a conversation worth having with the people who teach them daily. Teachers often see the pattern before parents do, simply because they watch how a child works rather than only what they produce.
